Zoe's Story:At birth, Zoe appeared to be healthy. It was just after she turned one year old that her mom noticed that she had hearing problems.
Zoe had her hearing tested several times as she got older. When she was 3 years old she ended up getting hearing aids. She really didn’t like them at first and would constantly try and take them off. She finally got used to them and it made life a little easier.
Even though she could hear, she still wasn’t about to talk very well. As she got old enough for school she was able to get speech therapy. She has also learned some sign language as well.
This past summer Zoe was able to get cochlear implants to help increase her hearing ability. A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear to provide sound signals to the brain.
This has made a huge difference for Zoe who loves to listen to music, dance and sing. She is a very active little girl who enjoys swimming and riding her bike or scooter. She also likes gymnastics and doesn’t let much slow her down!
In spite of her challenges, Zoe is a happy girl. She is very outgoing and funny… with an animated personality that makes people smile.
Sparrow Cash raised for Zoe will help with ongoing medical expenses and everyday living expenses. Students at Redmond High School will “earn” Sparrow Cash by completing a minimum of 256 hours of sponsored community service.
