Read Brooks's Story

Meet Brooks, a fun, polite, outgoing, and very affectionate 3-year-old, who loves to sing, dance, and “play” his guitar!

Brooks was diagnosed with spina bifida while still in his mother’s womb. Brooks’s spine didn’t form properly and when he was born, it didn’t fully close. This caused damage to his spinal cord and nerves.

Brooks had surgery to close the hole in his back on the same day he was born.

Brooks was also born with a condition called hydrocephalus. This means that Brooks had too much fluid around his brain.

When Brooks was 5 months old, he had surgery to place a shunt in his head to help drain the extra fluid.

Brooks cannot use his legs from the knees down. While he is really good at army crawling, he isn’t able to stand or walk on his own, so he uses a wheelchair most of the time.

Brooks has many doctor appointments and goes to physical therapy every week to help him get stronger. He also takes medicine every day to help prevent seizures.

Despite all these medical challenges, Brooks stays happy and full of joy! He inspires his family, friends, and everyone he meets!

Brooks will be adopted as a Sparrow to Three Rivers K-8 School in Sunriver. Students will work hard to earn money for Brooks through sponsored community service, supporting him and cheering him on as he and his family continue to navigate his medical journey.
