Benjamin is a super creative, intelligent, and caring 9-year-old boy who likes to draw, swim, and loves everything about Godzilla!
Benjamin was born in China, where he was adopted by his family when he was 2 years old.
Benjamin was born with a virus called hepatitis B, which can make people sick by harming their liver. He was also born with a cleft palate, meaning there was an opening in the roof of his mouth. As a baby, he had his first surgery to close the opening and repair his lip.
In September 2023, doctors discovered a large tumor on Benjamin’s liver. A month later, he underwent surgery, during which doctors removed the tumor, his gallbladder, and half of his liver.
Soon after, Benjamin and his family learned that the tumor was cancerous. The cancer, which began in his liver, has since spread to his pelvis, where another tumor has developed.
Benjamin has spent a lot of time in the hospital, where he has endured four cycles of chemotherapy. He begins his fifth cycle in October. The treatment’s side effects have been hard, leaving Benjamin extremely tired, causing him to lose his hair, and greatly reducing his appetite.
Despite the challenges, Benjamin continues to fight, drawing strength and inspiration from his favorite movie monster, Godzilla. His family hopes to visit China soon, giving him a chance to discover and connect with his Chinese heritage and culture.
Benjamin will be adopted as a Sparrow to Trinity Lutheran School in Bend. Trinity students will work hard to earn money for Benjamin through sponsored community service, supporting him and cheering him on as his family continues to navigate his medical journey.
