Read Carter's Story

Carter is a sweet three-year-old who is happy every day! He loves animals and dogs more than anything. Although he loves stuffies and blankets, Carter’s favorite toys are all things wooden. This includes wooden blocks, action figures, and trucks!
n
nWhen Carter was born, the doctor thought she had cut his foot during normal C-section birth. He wouldn’t stop crying, and soon they noticed additional bleeding on his hands as well. When the skin on his feet began scraping off, he was immediately transferred to Doernbecher.
n
nCarter spent the first six days of his life in the NICU. He was diagnosed with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare genetic skin disorder that causes painful blisters with the slightest friction. It also affects the throat, stomach, and esophagus.
n
nThere is no cure for EB, also known as Butterfly Disease, only treatments.
n
nAfter Carter’s mom learned how to bandage and take care of him, she was able to take him home. The long journey of pain and struggle began.
n
nCarter’s body is constantly fighting to heal his wounds, and this compromises his immune system. He must endure painful wound care treatments three times a week. He must be careful in the foods he eats as to not tear his esophagus.
n
nDespite all the pain, struggles, and therapy to grow stronger, Carter continues to put a smile on the faces of those around him. He is a fighter! This will be a lifelong journey for him as doctors fight for a cure.
n
nCarter will be adopted as a Sparrow to Cascade Jr. High School. Students will work hard to raise money for Carter through sponsored community service.
