Read Penelope's Story

Penelope is a sweet 5-year-old little girl who lights up the world with her beautiful smile. She loves music, being around people, and loves her new cat, Puma. Penelope also loves her large family of 8, including herself.

Penelope was born with an extremely rare condition that has yet to be given an actual term. Doctors refer to her condition as a genetic variance in the DHX16 gene

This rare condition has caused Penelope to be blind and have very low muscle tone.

Penelope in nonverbal and requires the use of a wheelchair. During the summer of 2023, she became very ill to the point doctors almost lost her. During that hospital stay it was determined Penelope needed to have a g-tube installed (feeding tube).

The g-tube has proven to be a great benefit to Penelope and has also proven to aid in helping her overcome any congestion much quicker. Previously, when Penelope would get sick, it was extremely hard for her to clear any congestion, and the common cold would really knock her down and create a severe medical scare.

Penelope is enrolled in speech and physical therapies. She wears AFO’s to help support her ankles and feet, and she also travels to Portland often to visit eye specialists.

Penelope’s condition is unique to her and was not genetically inherited. This unique circumstance allows doctors a rare chance to discover more in terms of genetic testing. Her family sees this as a beautiful opportunity to give back.

Despite many medical challenges, Penelope is a cheerful, sweet, and extremely affectionate little girl who has a way of deeply touching the hearts of everyone she meets.

Penelope will be adopted as the Sparrow to Hidden Valley High School. HVHS students will work hard to earn money for Penelope through sponsored community service.
