Haelo is an adorable 8-month-old baby boy who is one of the happiest babies you’ll meet. He loves being around people and has the cutest heart-melting smile.
Haelo was born with a rare red blood cell disorder called sickle cell syndrome (SCD). SCD is hereditary and passed down through the genetic system in the same way people get the color of their eyes, skin, and hair.
SCD is when red blood cells turn into a sickle shape. The cells die early, leaving a shortage of healthy red blood cells. They become sticky and block blood flow causing severe pain, which leads to a sickle cell crisis for Haelo.
The blocked blood flow through the body can lead to serious problems including stroke, eye problems, infections, and even the decline of organs.
SCD symptoms include extreme tiredness, headaches, dizziness, and weakness. Weather, sports, pools, and altitude (flying in an airplane) can adversely affect someone with SDC. Something as little as the common cold or flu can be a severe medical situation for Haelo.
Haelo has an older sister named Khalycee, who was also born with sickle cell syndrome. In many ways, her journey has been a blessing because it has given Haelo’s mom medical experience and knowledge of what to look for, such as a small fever that can be something very alarming.
Haelo will battle SCD his entire life and might even need blood transfusions. However, his family is determined to help him live each day to the fullest. They want him to grow up knowing he is not defined by his medical challenges. His family hopes his story will inspire you to live every day of your life to the fullest.
Haelo will be adopted as the Sparrow to McLoughlin Middle School. MAC students will work hard to earn money for Haelo through sponsored community service.
