Emma is a sweet 12-year-old girl who loves animals, gymnastics, cheerleading, her cat Binx, and spending time with her family and friends.
When Emma was 5 years old, she was diagnosed with chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). This rare autoimmune blood disorder occurs when the body’s immune system destroys platelets (which are necessary for blood clotting). The actual cause of ITP is unknown, but it is due to an immune system error that viral infections may trigger.
This condition puts Emma at a higher risk if she becomes injured because her body cannot clot blood, and she could easily bleed out. If she were to bump her head, it would be considered a serious injury and require immediate medical attention.
Emma’s treatments include daily medications that reduce platelet destruction, or that help the body produce more platelets. She has had steroid infusions and many doctor visits. Her diagnosis is chronic, and this will be something Emma will battle for the rest of her life.
When meeting Emma, you realize right away what a sweet and gentle-natured young lady she is. You would never guess the battles she has faced. In 2020 she and her mother lost their home to the Almeda fire. Then in 2021 Emma unexpectedly lost her father.
Emma’s story is a reminder that you never know what someone is facing, or what they have had to overcome. She hopes her story can inspire others to never give up, to live life to the fullest, and to be kind to everyone—because you never know what someone is going through.
Emma will be adopted as the Sparrow to Crater High School. Crater students will work hard to earn money for Emma through sponsored community service.
