Azlan is an incredible 13-year-old boy who has been termed by his parents as the “happiest kid they have ever known.” According to his parents, Azlan gives their life meaning and purpose.

Azlan was born with a condition called spina bifida. Spina bifida is a birth defect where there is an incomplete closing of the backbone and tissue around the spinal cord. It is a dangerous medical condition and requires surgery.

Azlan has also suffered from another condition called hydrocephalus. This condition causes excess fluid to build up around the brain. For this condition, a shunt is surgically placed in his head that allows the fluid to drain.

Azlan has had many medical procedures that include skin grafts, spinal rod surgery, IV infusions, and shunt surgeries.

Most recently, Azlan has been diagnosed with scoliosis and is severely impacted by autism.

When Azlan was a baby, a brain infection ultimately caused him to regress in many ways. Since then, he has learned to use an eye-gazing device that helps him communicate with others.

Azlan is currently enrolled in speech and occupational therapies and travels to Portland often for follow-up care. He also utilizes a wheelchair, as he is not able to walk or stand on his own.

Azlan will be adopted as the Sparrow to Lorna Byrne Middle School. Lorna Byrne students will work hard to earn money for Azlan through sponsored community service.
