Theo, also known as “Theo-Burrito,” is a super cute and cheerful little boy who will turn 3 years old in April 2025. He loves making friends and always brings smiles to everyone with his happy and fun personality.
At 8 weeks old, Theo was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Type 1 (SMA). This rare genetic disease makes Theo’s muscles weaker over time because it affects the nerves that help them work.
Theo spent two months in the pediatric intensive care unit and for three weeks of that stay, he had a special tube to help him breathe.
Theo’s typical week is full of therapy. He has physical, occupational, and water therapy several times per week. In 2024, between these weekly therapies and 4 different multi-week intensive programs, Theo completed nearly 400 hours of therapy! Theo’s hard work has helped strengthen his body and mind in many ways!
Theo is also working hard to stand all by himself and he recently stood for more than 6 minutes! He also has his own wheelchair, and a special helper called a Gate Trainer to help him learn how to walk.
Theo enjoys taking swimming lessons and spending time in the pool. The water allows him to move more freely and with some help, he can even practice walking.
This past year, Theo got really sick a couple of times and had to stay in the hospital. Despite those challenges, he has made great progress and keeps getting stronger! Theo is an inspiration and brings happiness to everyone he meets.
Theo will be adopted as a Sparrow to Irving Elementary School in Eugene. Students will work hard to earn money for Theo through sponsored community service, supporting him and cheering him on as he and his family continue to navigate his medical journey.
