Zeri could be defined as being a miracle baby. Her parents, Brooke and Alan, were surprised to learn that they were even pregnant with her. At 20 weeks into the pregnancy with Zeri, family issues were causing a lot stress on Brooke. This made doctors prepare for an early delivery date, just like Zeri’s two older siblings, Ezra and Zaya. Zeri had other plans though; she was born at 39 weeks, a full term pregnancy. Her initial diagnosis was Down Syndrome.
Brooke and her family cried for about two minutes. After that was out of their system, they were prepared for Zeri to live a full, active and healthy life, but further complications threw a wrench into those plans. Zeri failed both of her standard heart tests and an Echogram showed she would eventually need heart surgery.
Zeri had to see a cardiologist every week after she was born for therapy. Until, at 4 weeks old, Zeri went into heart failure. Brooke received a call at work that would scare any parent to death. Zeri had blood coming out of her mouth. She then was airlifted to Portland, where Zeri and her family stayed for 8 days. She was stabilized and put on very strong heart medication. At just over 4 months old, Zeri under went heart surgery to repair a main artery in her heart.
Now, Zeri is a beautiful, easy going, loving 1 year old. She attends 4 therapies a week! From early intervention to speech therapy, Zeri does it all. Even though Zeri has endured a tough first year of life, she has smiled through it all. She loves her family and they encourage her to become a strong little girl.
Sparrow Cash raised for Zeri will help with ongoing therapy, travel, and everyday living expenses. Students will “earn” Sparrow Cash completing a minimum of 256 hours of sponsored community service.
