Zachary's Story:
Zachary, or “Zach” as his friends call him, is a bright, laid back, 15-year-old boy who loves video games and hanging out with friends.

Just before Christmas of 2016, life drastically changed for this North Valley High School sophomore. A routine blood draw, as part of a general health check up, raised the concerns of his doctor. The initial thought was that Zach may be dealing with anemia, but further tests revealed something much more severe. On December 17th, 2016, Zach was diagnosed with T-Cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The very next day, Zach and his mother Dayna (herself, a two-time childhood cancer survivor), found themselves on a plane en route to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland. Once there, Zach was started on chemotherapy treatment immediately. Over the next few weeks, Zach endured chemotherapy twice a week directly into his spine. Zach also endured several blood and platelet transfusions, along with having to take steroids on a regular basis, causing him to be tired, swollen, and very hungry.

Currently Zach is home in Grants Pass and receives chemotherapy once a week in Medford, but still has to travel to Portland quite frequently. Zach’s treatment may eventually require a bone marrow transplant.

Although Zach has a long road ahead of him, he is facing this battle with the strength and heart of a true warrior. In spite of his struggles, he remains in good spirits, and can usually be found with a warm smile on his face. Like his mother before him, Zach is determined to win this battle with cancer!

Zach will be adopted as a Sparrow to his own school, North Valley High School in Grants Pass. Students at North Valley will work hard to raise money for Zach through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
