One might find it hard to meet a 14-year-old young man who is friendlier than Tyler. His warm personality shines through despite the many hardships he has endured throughout his life.
When Tyler was born, he had to stay in the hospital for several months. At just six weeks old, Tyler underwent extensive reconstructive jaw surgery due to micrognathia (a very small lower jaw), and also had surgery to lengthen the tendons in his knees. A few months later, Tyler had surgery on his feet. Tyler’s most prominent diagnosis is cerebral palsy and scoliosis. Tyler has difficulty swallowing and chewing so his food needs to be blended so he can drink it with a straw.
Altogether, Tyler has endured seven surgeries throughout his life. His most recent surgery (in September 2016) was on his right foot, which had been stuck in a downward fixed position. Tyler is unable to walk on his own, so he spends much of his time in a wheelchair. Due to his scoliosis, he also wears a chest brace to help straighten his spine.
Tyler’s life is filled with various forms of physical therapy. Tyler sees specialists once a week to work toward the goal of improving his muscle strength. He continues his physical therapy regiment every day at home, thanks to home modifications that his family has made for him.
Life for Tyler has been challenging from the start, but Tyler has, and continues to meet these challenges with strength, courage, and grace. Tyler loves to write and science is his favorite subject. He also enjoys playing video games, is an active Boy Scout, and has a special bond with his big brother Kevin.
Tyler will be adopted as a Sparrow to Logos Public Charter School. Students at Logos will work hard to raise money for Tyler through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
