Saralen's Story:
Last fall, Saralen began having cold symptoms that started to worsen over time. She then began having difficulty breathing, especially during the night. Her parents decided to take her to see a doctor.

It wasn’t until the third visit that doctors noticed something on the back of her palate. The family was sent to St. Charles and then on to Doernbecher’s in Portland. An MRI was done. Results showed a lump in Saralen’s neck and a biopsy of the lump showed a fungus of some sort. She underwent surgery to remove the mass and it was sent to pathology for further testing.

It was on September 14, 2011 that Saralen’s parents, Sara and Jose, received the devastating news that their daughter had cancer. She was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma Stage 3. Because this type of cancer occurs in the muscle tissues, doctors immediately began to run other tests to determine if the cancer had spread to other areas of her body. Fortunately, it had not.

Saralen had a chest port surgically implanted and began chemotherapy treatments about a week later. She has received chemo once a week since September and will continue until sometime in June. She has just finished 6 weeks of daily radiation around her neck and behind her nose. This radiation has left Saralen unable to speak or eat. Doctors believe both will return in time.

Once chemotherapy treatments are finished, Saralen will receive regular medical checks to monitor the status of her cancer. Doctors say that she has a 75% chance that the cancer will not return. For now, she enjoys her time at home between her trips to receive chemo. Saralen loves the color purple and playing with her pink and purple My Little Ponies. Her favorite thing is to dress up like a princess and she can often be found wearing a pretty dress.

Sparrow Cash for Saralen will pay for ongoing medical expenses, transportation costs for trips to Portland and family living expenses.
