Robbie's Story:(2/1/10) In many ways, Robbie Mitchell is a typical 13-year-old boy, navigating his way through middle school. However, Robbie's journey up to this point has been much more difficult than most. Robbie was born with a serious condition called actin filament myopathy. His body lacks a protein called "actin," which is crucial for muscle growth and development. Because of this, Robbie's body is fragile and this condition has caused numerous complications throughout his life. Robbie is susceptible to pneumonia, which he had six times before the age of 3. As a result, Robbie sleeps with a ventilator every nigh to ensure that he gets enough oxygen. Most recently, Robbie had major back surgery for scoliosis. Doctors inserted a titanium rod, attached to his spine, which gives his body more structural support, something that normal muscle development would typically provide. Robbie is still recovering from his back surgery, a recovery that could last 6 months or longer. He uses a walker to get used to walking again and hasn't let this keep him from returning to school, although he does have to travel to Portland often for check ups. Robbie is an amazing young man, wise beyond his years, and is determined to overcome his hardships. He enjoys playing video games, spending time outdoors, and hanging out with his friends. Robbie attends South Middle School in Grants Pass. South is very excited to adopt one of its own as their Sparrow and students are looking forward to supporting Robbie, both financially and emotionally.
