Penelope's Story:
Penelope is a sweet two-year-old little girl who lights up the world with her beautiful smile. She is loved by everyone who knows her.

Penelope was born with an extremely rare condition that has yet to be given an actual term. Doctors refer to her condition as a genetic variance in the DHX16 gene.

This rare condition has caused Penelope to be blind and have very low muscle tone.

Penelope is also at risk for possible kidney issues and seizures. Thus far, Penelope has not experienced these two issues, but will be monitored closely by doctors.

Penelope is non-verbal and is enrolled in speech therapy. She also requires the use of ankle braces and physical therapy.

Penelope is currently being seen by Shriners Hospital for Children to monitor her mobility and possibly get her the use of a “stander” to allow weight bearing support.

Penelope’s condition is unique to her and was not genetically passed down. This allows doctors a rare chance to discover more in terms of genetic testing.

Despite many medical challenges, Penelope is a cheerful, sweet, and extremely affectionate little girl.

Penelope will be adopted as a Sparrow to Mazama High School. Mazama Students will work hard to raise money for Penelope through sponsored community service.
