Condition: Congenital Heart Defect

Club: Cascade Christian High School Sparrow Club Service Hours: 431
Date Adopted: 3/20/2012
In an attempt to fix this problem, Nicholas underwent open-heart surgery when he was three years old. It was supposed to be the only surgery he would ever need. However, after only six months, tests showed that the surgery did not hold and that there were still problems. Over the next several years, doctors watched Nicholas very closely. He was put on blood pressure medication and was told to limit his physical activity. In spite of this, Nicholas’s heart was enlarging and damage to his heart valve was getting worse. In response to this, Nicholas underwent his second open-heart surgery at nine years old. Unfortunately, like the first surgery, this one failed to hold. After six months, his heart was still enlarged and the valve that was replaced was leaking.
Nicholas is now facing his third open-heart surgery, which he will receive on March 23rd, 2012. During this surgery, doctors will replace the damaged valve with a new one, which should last for several years. However, as Nicholas continues to grow, he will eventually need an additional surgery to fit an adult-sized valve.
Cascade Christian High School is proud to adopt Nicholas as their Sparrow. Students will work hard on community service and fundraising projects in order to earn money for Nicholas and his family which will help pay for uncovered medical bills, travel expenses for medical appointments, and other needs as they arrive.
The Sparrow Club at Cascade Christian is co-sponsored by the Selland family (former Sparrow family), Sasco Fasteners, Metal Masters, and Wells Fargo Advisors.
