Condition: Ventricular Septal Defect; Blake's pouch cyst
City, State: Medford, OR
Club: Hedrick Middle School Sparrow Club Service Hours: 951
Date Adopted: 11/04/2014
Just two months before McKinley was scheduled to come into this world, her mom and dad (Chad and Kayleigh) were told their little girl would be born with difficulties, due to an ultrasound that revealed a problem in her brain.
Sweet McKinley was born on March 31, 2014 and had an MRI shortly afterward. The MRI led doctors to diagnose McKinley with a Blake’s pouch cyst. Thankfully, this cyst does not seem to be growing, therefore not presenting an immediate problem, but doctors will need to watch it closely to ensure that it does not become a serious issue.
Unfortunately, what is of great concern is a very large VSD (ventricular septal defect) hole that was found in McKinley’s heart. This hole is between her right and left ventricle and is causing McKinley’s heart to work too hard. Having a little heart that is working in overdrive also affects McKinley’s weight. She burns calories faster than a typical baby and also has digestive issues, causing her to be diagnosed with “failure to thrive.” At 6 months old, McKinley weighs less than 15 lbs.
Because McKinley is in the midst of congestive heart failure, doctors believe that one or more heart surgeries may be in her near future.
Although McKinley and her family are at the very beginning of this journey, her parents cherish each day they have together and have hope and faith in what the future holds for their beautiful little girl.
McKinley will be adopted as a Sparrow to Hedrick Middle School in Medford. Students will work hard to raise money for McKinley through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
