Malia's Story:

Malia was born 2 weeks early. Her family knew she had a cleft lip at her mom’s 20-week ultrasound. Then she had multiple visits with a high-risk obstetrician in Eugene to see Malia in an ultrasound, to check on development and to see if she had a cleft palate.

Malia’s parents never saw signs of a cleft palate, so they were hopeful that when she was born it was just the lip. They think due to an intact gum line, which is not typical with bi-lateral cleft lip, that the ultrasound kept making them think it was a low percent for no palate issues.

When she was born she had breathing issues due to fluid that got into her lungs and in the birthing room they immediately found out she had a bi-lateral cleft palate. Her mom was devastated and didn’t know what to think or do in the moment, but knew she had to be strong for Malia and her husband, Sean. They looked at each other and said, “We can do this. We are a good team that can accomplish anything together.”

Malia was in the NICU for 5 days due to breathing issues and feedings. She failed her hearing test three times due to fluid in her ears. She has been to OHSU multiple times to prep for her first surgery along with checking her hearing.

Malia had her first bi-lateral lip repair and tubes placed in both ears on May 30, 2018. Recovery has been rough, but she is improving daily.

Now that Malia can hear better she is cooing and smiling much more. It makes her family very happy!  She is also learning how to eat solid foods. She is a sweet little baby girl, very alert and likes to be held and cuddled. She has a big family behind her that is cheering her on and loving her every day!

Sparrow Cash raised for Malia will help with ongoing medical expenses, including upcoming surgeries that she will need, and travel to doctor appointments in Portland. Students at Trinity Lutheran School will “earn” Sparrow Cash by completing a minimum of 256 hours of sponsored community service.
