Maevin's Story:Everything seemed fine when Maevin was born. She came home from the hospital as a healthy baby, but as she began to grow her development as an infant was slow.
At 10 months old Maevin had her eyes tested and found that she was far-sighted. She got glasses, but that didn’t help with her mobility, so she started physical therapy.
Maevin also had blood tests done to see if that would help determine why she was slow to gain weight and developing so slowly. She saw doctors and had many tests done at Stanford as well as at OHSU in Portland.
Brain scans were done and those showed that Maevin’s brain is different than that of a typically developing child. She has developmental delays and signs of hypotonic cerebral palsy, but no actual diagnosis. Doctors say she is a “medical mystery”.
Maevin didn’t crawl until she was 2 ½ years old… and only began walking at 3 ½ years. Physical and occupational therapy has been life changing for Maevin! She used to be sensitive to loud noises, but now they don’t seem to bother her as much. Maevin goes to Montessori school now and is making improvements.
Once she began working with her speech, physical, and occupational therapists… she began making so much progress! Most of Maevin’s time outside of school is spent at her different therapy sessions.
In spite of her challenges, she is a happy little girl that brings a smile to everyone she meets!
Maevin is such a joy to her family! She has a beautiful smile and kind spirit. She is very caring to her baby brother. She just loves people! She enjoys music and dancing, especially when it involves Mary Poppins or The Sound of Music. She also likes to “read” books. When the weather is warm, she really enjoys going to the park or floating the river with her family.
Sparrow Cash raised for Maevin will help with ongoing medical expenses, special equipment and everyday living expenses. Students at Pacific Crest Middle School will “earn” Sparrow Cash by completing a minimum of 256 hours of sponsored community service.
