Kenny's Story:Kenny is a smart, witty, incredibly friendly 11-year old boy with a great sense of humor and a seemingly endless positive outlook.
Two years ago, on September 24th, 2014, after months of carious symptoms, tests, and studies, Kenny was diagnosed with craniopharyngioma, a noncancerous brain tumor. Five days later, on September 29th, 2014, Kenny endured an 8-hour brain surgery in which surgeons removed the cyst portion of the tumor and drained fluid. Surgery to remove the rest of the tumor was deemed too risky due to the tumor’s location (between the hemispheres of the brain, on the pituitary gland).
Upon waking from his lengthy and invasive surgery, Kenny’s courage, humor, and positivity were on full display when his first words were, “How cool is my scar?”
The next part of Kenny’s battle involved proton radiation treatment at Mass General Hospital in Boston. For two months, Kenny, along with his mother (his father and sister had to stay home) lived at Christopher’s Haven while Kenny received his radiation treatment 5 days a week, for a total of 40 doses.
Kenny undergoes an MRI every 3 months to check for tumor growth. Due to the tumor’s position on his pituitary gland, Kenny’s body does not produce natural growth hormones.
As a result, Kenny has to have growth hormone treatment on a daily basis. Although Kenny’s medical journey is far from over, the Botting family is very thankful that Kenny is healthy and they are determined to face whatever the future may bring. In the meantime, Kenny continues to enjoy being a kid, jumping on his trampoline, racing his go-kart, swimming, camping, and just loving his life!
Kenny will be adopted to Woodstock Academy, and will be the very first Sparrow adopted in the state of Connecticut. Students at Woodstock Academy will work hard to raise money for Kenny through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
