Juno's Story:Juno is almost three years old. When he was born, the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck three times, which caused a lack of oxygen to his brain during birth. This is called Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy. Juno was immediately sent to the NICU where he was placed on a cooling bed to try and lower his body temperature and to minimize the swelling and damage to his brain for the first few days of his life. Shortly after that an MRI revealed that the damage to the brain would most likely result in Cerebral Palsy and affect his body’s ability to move.
When he was just a year old, Juno was officially diagnosed with Quadriplegic Athetoid Cerebral Palsy. All of his muscle groups are affected, including muscles needed for speaking. Juno does not have functional use of his hands, cannot sit unassisted, walk, crawl or hold his head steady. He needs full assistance for all daily living activities such as eating, dressing and going to the bathroom. He is technically non-verbal, although he can make various sounds and tries to communicate with his voice.
Juno’s schedule is filled with doctor appointments, intervention visits as well as physical, occupational and speech therapy. Many of these types of therapy are not covered by insurance and his family must keep up with these costs. Additionally Juno’s family is expecting a new baby boy and they desperately need wheelchair accessible transportation to get to and from places with the entire family.
Despite everything Juno is a happy little boy. He loves to swim, go on nature strolls and run around in his gait trainer/walker device. Juno also loves Disney movies and to dance to the songs by kicking his leg in time with the music.
Juno will melt your heart with his smile. He will be adopted as a Sparrow to Reynolds High School. Students will work hard to raise money for Juno through sponsored community service and fundraising.
