Jacob's Story:
(11.17.09) Jacob is 10 years old. He is in the 5th grade. In October 2008 Jacob was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and will undergo treatment until Jan 2012. After receiving the news of his cancer in October, he had to have a picc line put in which is a like a long term IV that he can go home with, for all the chemo he would receive. Just about a week later, his arm started swelling up, and an ultra-sound revealed a blood clot in the main vein in his chest, and a couple in his arm. The doctor started Jacob on a blood thinner twice a day for the rest of his treatment. The picc line was then removed and the doctor considered putting a port a cath in his chest, but that would require surgery and the he did not feel Jacob was stable enough for surgery so he just put a regular IV for a while and that kept him stuck in the hospital. Around Thanksgiving he received his port and the surgery went very well. We have had great luck with the port working well for his meds however he continues getting blood clots from it in his chest, so the doctors do ultra sounds every couple of months to check on clots and will keep him on his blood thinner until he gets his port removed in 2013. On January 3rd Jacob had an accident where he slipped on a rock and developed blood clots in his leg and his leg got infected and he had to have surgery once again - and that was a big set back for him. He is now doing well and has managed to stay away from the hospital for a couple of months. He takes daily pills at home as part of his chemo and goes into the clinic every two weeks for treatment. Jacob's family enjoys the outdoors and love riding quads any chance they get. They also enjoying the mountain, playing in the snow, camping and fishing. Jacob's family is very active in volunteering for the Children's Cancer Association
