Holly's Story:When Holly was 8-years-old, she began experiencing pain in her ear. Thinking it was an ear infection, Holly was put on antibiotics, but after several weeks, it was clear they were not working. Shortly after, the right side of Holly’s face stopped working and the paralysis kept getting worse. Over the next few days, following a CT scan and an MRI, Holly and her family learned the reason for her ongoing ear pain. She did have an ear infection, but there was also something else…a tumor, located behind Holly’s eye socket, and by her sinuses and inner ear. This tumor was causing pain because it was pressing on her nerves and preventing fluid from draining.
Holly was officially diagnosed with a type of cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma. After an intensive 4-6 week daily radiation plan, and a grueling 43-week chemotherapy treatment plan, Holly was declared cancer free in the summer of 2016.
However, this good news only lasted a few precious months. Holly began to feel numbness in her face once again. After some tests, devastating news was delivered: the cancer was back.
In January 2017, Holly had surgery to biopsy the new tumor. The surgeon was able to remove some of the tumor to help clear her nasal passage and drain fluid in her sinus. Shortly after, Holly started a new chemotherapy plan, which will be every week for the next 9 months.
Through all of this, Holly has been and continues to be a fighter with a lot of fire in her heart.
Holly is very active and loves sports, especially soccer and swimming. She also enjoys reading and dancing and is known to show a lot of “spunk!” It is this trait, among others, that has caused so many friends and people from the community to flock to her side as she fights. Her soccer team even named themselves “Holly’s Heroes” to show their support!
Holly will be adopted as a Sparrow to Sherwood Middle School. Students at SMS will work hard to raise money for Holly through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
