Haydon's Story:
On September 3, 2018, Haydon’s world changed dramatically. She started to experience stroke-like symptoms while at the lake with her family. Once at the hospital in Bend, through testing, the doctor's found a tumor on her brain. They rushed Haydon via air ambulance to Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital (OHSU) in Portland for further testing, evaluating and treatment.

The doctor's prescribed Haydon medication to get the inflammation down and sent her home for the time being. She had to return to Portland for follow-up and consultations. The medications helped and the stroke-like symptoms went away. However, the tumor needed to be removed.

Her pre-op appointment showed that the tumor was very deep in her brain and it had changed since her last scan. Haydon had the tumor removed on November 20th after a 13-hour brain surgery. She had complications post-op with her vision and balance and was hospitalized for 30 days.

The surgeon believed she got all the tumor and sent it off to pathology. The family was hoping to learn that it was not cancerous… but that wasn’t the case. It was cancer. Haydon’s current diagnosis is diffuse astrocytoma boarder line anaplastic astrocytoma (grade 3). Doctors will monitor her closely, but no additional cancer treatments are needed at this time.

Now Haydon is in the ‘wait and watch’ period. She goes to Portland every 3 months for MRI’s. The brain surgery left her paralyzed on the right
side and affected her vision. She uses a wheelchair to get around school safely. Haydon does some type of physical therapy
daily to help regain her strength and balance. She understandably gets frustrated because she can’t do all the things she used to do.

Haydon is a bright and beautiful 13-year-old girl who loves spending time with her friends and swimming every time she gets a chance. She is grateful for her family and friends that have been supportive in helping her fight this battle.

Sparrow Cash raised for Haydon will help with ongoing medical expenses and everyday living expenses. Students at Sky View Middle School will “earn” Sparrow Cash by completing a minimum of 256 hours of sponsored community service.
