Dominic's Story:(11.28.11) 5-year-old Dominic Cardoza is an energetic and adventurous little boy who loves to laugh and spend time with this family and friends. However, young Dominic is also a very strong, courageous, and tenacious warrior, fighting a difficult battle with stage IV neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood cancer in which tumors develop from nerve tissue. When he was first diagnosed in April of 2011, Dominic had a total of five - one in his abdomen, one on each hip, one in his chest, and one on his skull. Dominic immediately started treatment at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, beginning with his first round of chemotherapy. Over the next several months, Dominic endured five more rounds of chemotherapy (bringing the total to six) and also underwent major surgery (in August of 2011) in which doctors removed the tumor on his adrenal gland, along with the adrenal gland itself. Shortly after this surgery, Dominic underwent the next phase of his treatment- a stem cell transplant, in which Dominic's own stem cells (which were previously withdrawn) are re-introduced back into his body. This transplant was very hard on Dominic's body and required him to be isolated in a hospital room for nearly five weeks. In addition to chemotherapy, surgery, and the stem cell transplant, Dominic's treatment plan also includes 12 rounds of radiation therapy, as well as antibody therapy which will begin in mid December 2011. If all goes well, Dominic's treatment will be finished in June of 2012. Until then, Dominic continues to fight, doing whatever is necessary to win his battle with cancer. Dominic's strength, courage, and unwillingness to give up, is an inspiration to all who learn of his fight.
