Dennis's Story:

Dennis was born on April 14, 2011. As with the story of many newborn babies, you just can’t help yourself but to fall instantly in-love. Immediately doctors discovered that this precious little angel suffered a birth defect.

It was very apparent that little Dennis had Myelomeningocele, also known as open spina bifida. It is the most severe form of spina bifida, and can be associated with problems such as; hydrocephalus, a tethered spinal cord, possibility for seizures, and little to no ability to walk. All are conditions that have plagued this sweet child.

During Dennis’s first week of life, pediatric neurosurgeon’s successfully operated to close the opening on his back, and place the spinal cord and its nerve roots back inside the spine. In addition, a shunt was surgically installed to provide drainage from the excess fluid in little Dennis’s brain.

This sweet child, now at the tender age of five is a “big grown up boy”. Dennis’s diagnosis has created some challenges in his life, but the amazing and beautiful aspect to his life story is that this diagnosis never stunted his sweet personality. Dennis has a fun-loving and endearing personality, he is very smart, and very determined.

This magnetic full-of-life persona will prove to be an asset for Dennis as he faces future challenges associated with his condition. Our support can be the wings he will soar upon.

What’s the future like for this sweet- Spiderman loving, ninja turtle fanatic, race car driver young boy? Dennis will continue with various forms of therapy, endure some leg surgeries, and is hopeful to start stepping into his future with the assistance from an Upsee (assisted walking-harness, attaching child to parent). Of course, all with a great big smile across his adorable face.

Dennis will be adopted as a Sparrow to Hanby Middle School and Sams Valley Elementary. Students at these two school’s will work hard to raise money for Dennis through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
