Conner's Story:It is next to impossible not to be inspired by Conner, an 18-year-old high school senior at Lost River Jr./Sr. High School.
Conner, a hard-working and determined young man, is well known to everyone in his community and was a skilled player and leader on his high school basketball team. However, an accident this past summer changed everything…except for Conner’s positive attitude and outlook on life.
In July of 2016, Conner was working wheel lines on the family property. He drove his ATV down through an empty ditch, and was thrown off on his way up, resulting in a broken back. The break is categorized as an ASIA A Complete T11/T12, the location of which is down near his bellybutton.
Conner was immediately taken by ambulance to Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls, and then flown to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. Surgeons at St. Charles installed two rods and several screws into Conner’s back. After recovery from this surgery, Conner spent several weeks in Denver, CO receiving physical and occupational therapy from 9am-4pm, Monday-Friday.
Conner remains paralyzed from the waist down, but one will never find Conner feeling sorry for himself. Conner knows that he will physically need to approach life differently now, but this hasn’t deterred him from continuing to work toward his goals and enjoy life. Conner desires to live his life as an inspiration to others.
Conner wants to be a farmer and his physical condition doesn’t keep him from driving, whether that is in a car or a tractor. It also hasn’t kept him from his love for the game of basketball. Conner has plans to get a modified chair so he can continue to develop his skills in wheelchair basketball leagues. When he isn’t playing himself, Conner loves to coach, and spent time last year coaching basketball for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. When he isn’t working, Conner can usually be found hunting or fishing!
Conner will be adopted as a Sparrow to Lost River Jr./Sr. High School in Merrill. Students at Lost River will work hard to raise money for Conner through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
