Caitlyn's Story:Caitlyn is a social, outgoing, stylish, and beautiful 12-year-old girl, full of joy and humor. However, for nearly a year, Caitlyn has been in a fight for her life, after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in April of 2012.
It was just after Christmas of 2011 that Caitlyn started experiencing pain in her right leg. The pain increased to the point of causing Caitlyn to limp, and a short time later, her leg began to swell. X-rays didn’t reveal anything wrong, but an MRI did- cancer had started inside the bone, just above the right knee.
In April, Caitlyn began receiving chemotherapy treatment every three weeks, which then quickly changed to treatment every two weeks. Although treatment was spaced two weeks apart, Caitlyn would often have to be hospitalized in between rounds of chemotherapy.
Unfortunately, by June, the chemo treatment had not worked as well as it needed to. One day, doctors came into the room and told Caitlyn and her family that they had only a few hours to make the decision of whether or not to amputate Caitlyn’s leg.
Showing a sense of calm, peace, and understanding beyond her years, Caitlyn made her decision, and on June 22nd, 2012, her right leg was amputated just above the knee.
As of October 2012, Caitlyn continues to receive chemotherapy treatments and has almost completed the process of getting fitted with a brand new prosthetic leg. Caitlyn’s strength, courage, and determination are an inspiration to all who meet her.
Caitlyn will be adopted as a Sparrow to Hidden Valley High School. Students will work hard to raise money for Caitlyn through community service and fundraising projects, sponsored by Gates Home Furnishings, Taprock, and Elmer’s. Funds raised for Caitlyn will help with medical, travel, and general living expenses during this challenging time.
