Brinley's Story:Brinley is sweet and happy 9-year-old girl, who has a smile that can light up a room and beautiful brown eyes that communicate the joy and love she has for life. Born with quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, Brinley has experienced life much differently than other kids her age.
Brinley has very limited control of her body and does not have core support, so she is unable to talk, sit, stand, or walk on her own. She wears a SPIO vest, which is a type of compression vest, that helps with posture and stabilization, and she spends a lot of time in her wheelchair.
In addition to Cerebral Palsy, Brinley also has a seizure disorder (suffering seizures ranging from a one or two per month, to sometimes one every other day), along with cortical visual impairment, severely affecting her eyesight.
Sweet Brinley has also endured major surgery. Several years ago, surgeons cut tendons in Brinley’s lower body in order to loosen up her legs, hips, and feet. After two months in a body cast, and four more months in a brace, Brinley was able to start bearing weight on her own feet, which allows her to use a walker from time to time. Currently, Brinley receives BOTOX injections every six months to release her tight muscles and she will most likely need more surgeries in the future as she grows.
While it is true that Brinley’s mobility is greatly limited, her loving family makes sure that she isn’t missing out on life and all it has to offer. You can often find this close family enjoying the great outdoors through hiking and other fun activities, always finding ways to make sure Brinley is part of the fun.
Brinley goes to school daily and absolutely loves to ride the bus. She has many friends, greatly enjoys music, and loves being a big sister to her two younger sisters (Kacy and Taylor) and to her baby brother (Porter).
Brinley will be adopted to Perry High School, and will be one of the very first Sparrows in the state of Arizona. Thanks to the support of Black Rock Coffee Bar, students at Perry High School will have the opportunity to work hard to raise money for sweet Brinley through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
