Avery's Story:Avery is a 5-year-old little boy whose smile lights up the room. He is fun and full of love and excitement. Avery enjoys being active outside and being around people.
Shortly after Avery was born, doctors discovered he was having unexplained seizures. Doctors performed a multitude of tests and tried medications to control these seizures but were unable to find the cause.
At 4 months old, genetic testing revealed a mutation on the KCNA2 gene. This causes a condition called epileptic encephalopathy.
This condition causes him to have multiple severe disabilities. He uses a wheelchair, is nonverbal, is tube fed and has a cortical vision impairment.
Despite all these challenges Avery is a happy, smiley boy! He works hard to stay strong with many types of therapy.
He is learning to communicate using an eye gaze device. He loves toys that light up and make loud noises. Avery also enjoys books, stories, and music.
Avery will be adopted as a Sparrow to Sherwood Middle School. Students will work hard to raise money for Avery through sponsored community service.
