Alicia's Story:Sweet and adorable Alicia will celebrate her first birthday on March 30, 2016. Along with this milestone comes the realization of how much baby Alicia has been through during her first year of life.
Alicia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) on October 9th, 2015, during her 6-month well baby checkup. Alicia’s belly felt hard and distended, so a blood test was ordered. The blood test revealed leukemia and Alicia was immediately sent to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
At the time of diagnosis, Alicia’s white blood count was over 800,000 (anything over 50,000 is considered critical). After only one day of treatment, Alicia’s white cell count dropped to 214,000, astonishing her doctors. At the end of three days of treatment, her white blood cell count was down to 6000! As positive and amazing as Alicia’s initial response to treatment has been, her fight is far from over.
Alicia must endure weekly lumbar punctures and weekly chemotherapy treatment, which has caused her to develop mouth sores and lose her hair, among other side effects. Alicia will continue these weekly treatments until she is 3 years old.
Through all of this, Alicia remains a sweet and content baby girl with a life-changing smile. She loves music and singing and is adored by her mother, father, and big sister.
Alicia will be adopted as a Sparrow to Aloha High School in Beaverton. Students at Aloha will work hard to raise money for Alicia through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
