Alex's Story:Alex is a teenager who loves to hang out with his friends and family. He lived the life of a normal teen until he was fourteen. One day he noticed some abnormal swelling. His parents decided that they should probably take him to the doctor to make sure that everything was alright. After a trip to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, doctors announced that he had stage four embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of soft tissue cancer.
Shortly after being diagnosed, Alex underwent an eight-hour surgery to remove tumors, followed by weeks of chemotherapy and radiation.
In 2011 a scan was taken and Alex found out that his cancer had returned. He then began a new kind of chemotherapy and things seemed to be working. His cancer appeared to have gone away. Six months later the cancer returned and was found in his chest and lung.
Alex had to decide if he wanted to try another treatment. He decided to undergo another eight months of chemotherapy which came with lots of nausea and trying to sleep off his pain. Sometimes he wants to give up but he knows he needs to stay strong.
Alex’s family has been very supportive through it all. Alex’s health and well being has been their first priority in all of their decisions. His parents take turns taking time off of work to be with Alex during his treatments.
The Rivera family is very appreciative of Glencoe High School and their willingness to help their son with medical bills and needs. They had never considered that teenagers could do something so incredible. Thank you Glencoe!
