Adrian was born in November 2012, 3 months earlier than his projected due date. He weighed 1 pound, 14 oz at birth, and was 13 inches long. Even though Adrian was so tiny, his parents knew that he was a fighter as he was a feisty little guy! He was doing great the first two weeks of his life – opening his eyes and lifting his head!
At three weeks, Adrian struggled with Necrotizing Introcolitis, which is a condition that premature babies experience when they are not ready to feed, as their intestines do not get enough circulation and they deteriorate. Adrian was flown to Seattle Children’s Hospital and had 3 surgeries in a 4 day period of time. The surgeries left Adrian with a shortened digestive system – 10cm of large intestine, and 14.5cm of small intestine (an average child is born with 2 feet of intestines).
Adrian stayed in the NICU for months after his surgery, and then moved to a hospital room, to make sure that he, and his intestines, would grow. During this time, efforts were made so that he would gain weight – he needed to weigh 14 lbs before he could have the final surgery. Adrian was 10 months old when he achieved the 14 lb goal, and was able to have surgery. The surgery took 5 long hours, and his parents waited….hoping for good news. The doctor greeted Adrian’s parents with very good news – Adrian’s intestine had grown more than expected!
Adrian stayed in the hospital to heal for another 2 months, and then his family was able to move to the Ronald McDonald house until the doctors were sure that Adrian was well enough to go home. Two weeks before Adrian’s 1st birthday, his family was finally able to pack up their things and go home!
Adrian has had a few setbacks that took him back to the hospital, but only for short stays.
All in all, Adrian is doing well, and moving forward with a smile on his face. He is a very happy baby. Even though he has been through so much, he hardly ever cries. His strength and intelligence amazes his parents every day. He has come such a long way since the day he was born. Adrian’s parents know that they are blessed every day, and that Adrian’s future will be amazing!
