Abel has gone through more than most of us will in our lifetime and he is only three years old.
It was at the 18-week ultrasound that Abel parents learned that their son had a serious problem. They were sent to Portland for further tests and soon learned that their son would be born with a condition called congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a condition that causes some of the lower organs in the body to push up into the upper part of the chest causing the heart and lungs to develop improperly.
Abel's mother would have to travel to Portland every month for ultrasounds to monitor his progress. In July, she was asked to stay in Portland, as the birth date was getting close, and told to prepare for the worst, as many of the babies born with this condition do not survive.
On July 26th, 2012, Abel was born 2 weeks early. Immediately he was taken away and to be monitored and checked to see if he would be a good candidate for the surgery necessary to correct his problems. He had to wait 21 days before he could have surgery as doctors attempted to stabilize him. He coded 3 times but doctors managed to save him each time.
On August 15th of that same year, Abel endured a 9-hour surgery to repair what doctors soon learned to be a more severe defect then they had originally thought. All of Abel’s lower organs had moved into his upper chest cavity, not just his stomach. Doctors were able to get everything back in to place and repair the hole in his diaphragm.
Now, after 5 surgeries, Abel still has a difficult path ahead of him that could include even more surgery or experimental treatments. He still travels regularly to Portland for continual check ups and has started speech and physical therapy.
Although Abel has had a tough journey so far, he loves everybody; is very outgoing and has more energy than he can handle sometimes. He, also, loves his play dough and his Mr. Potato Head!
Abel will be adopted as a Sparrow to Ridgeview High School in Redmond. Students will work hard to raise money for Abel through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
