Tyrus has such a fun, active personality that makes it hard to see that he is actually battling a rare disease. When Traci, Tyrus’ mom, was 32 weeks pregnant, Tyrus’ limbs were shorter than they should have been. This lead to an initial diagnosis of Dwarfism. Five short weeks later, an ultrasound showed that Tyrus had a broken femur in the womb. He was then re-diagnosed with Type III Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also known as, Brittle Bone Disease.
Type III Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or OI, is considered the most severe case of OI and was displayed early with Tyrus, as he was born with four broken bones, and has had multiple fractures in just over a year of life. Since Tyrus has already had numerous fractures, his limbs have become bowed.
Tyrus and his family make numerous trips to Shriners Hospital in Portland for check ups and have to travel to see OI specialists that are outside of Central Oregon. He is in need of splinting materials, as his fractures are frequent. He will also need adaptive play structures to reduce the risk of fractures. Tyrus will likely need a wheelchair or walker when he starts walking as well.
Although Tyrus’ life has been a difficult one, he is a beautiful, fun little boy who loves being just like his big brother. He enjoys listening to music and has a cannon for an arm.
Tyrus will be adopted as a Sparrow to Highland Magnet School in Bend. Students will work hard to raise money for Tyrus through sponsored community service by the Delgado family and fundraising projects.
