Nathan's Story:Nathan is a nine year old boy with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. He has hearing impairments which lead to a cochlear implant. He is also visually impaired and wears glasses. Nathan also has acute upper airway obstruction which caused breathing problems and severe sleep apnea. He has had three corrective surgeries within the past 2 years, one being his Tracheostomy.
At 16 weeks of pregnancy an ultrasound showed that Nathan had Gastroschisis, which means his intestines were outside his body. He was born prematurely at 34 weeks but was otherwise healthy. He endured his first surgery when he was only two days old to put his intestines back inside his little body. Most babies with Gastroschisis recover fully but Nathan spent the first month and a half of his life in the NICU where doctors monitored his blood pressure, oxygen levels, breathing and special feeding through a tube. At just one month old, doctors had to do a blood transfusion.
Nathan’s struggle continued after he went home. He started having breathing difficulties and needed rescue breathing. After only being a home for a week, he was admitted back into the hospital for another month. This is when it became apparent that Nathan would not lead a normal life.
It became clear that Nathan was not meeting the milestones that other toddlers did. At 3 year’s old doctors diagnosed him with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy.
It was believed his CP was most likely a result of either lack of oxygen to the brain or trauma due to medications he received at birth.
Nathan desperately needs our help. His family must keep up with all the costs of medical expenses not covered under insurance and the special food, therapy and equipment to properly care for him .
Despite all of these challenges, Nathan lives a full and happy life. He enjoys books, meeting new people, playing with his two brothers, the outdoors and enjoys new adventures with his friends and family. He is very expressive and able to communicate with a smile, “YES” and shake his head side to side, “No”. Nathan loves making new friends too!
Nathan will be adopted as a Sparrow to Hillsboro High School. Students will work hard to raise money for Nathan through sponsored community service and fundraising.
