Lucy's Story:

When Lucy was born she was ‘tongue-tied’, which means the connecting skin under her tongue (a membrane called the frenulum) was short and extended too far toward the front of her tongue. This kept her from nursing and feeding properly, so she wasn’t gaining weight like she should. At 6 months old Lucy had surgery to correct this.

As she began to grow her parents noticed that she seemed unbalanced and wobbly in her actions and basically, she was a little “floppy” with her body movements, which affected her as she learned to sit up and walk.

They took her to a specialist at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital when she was 2 years old and she was diagnosed with Hypotonia. This is a condition in which there is decreased muscle tone and strength that results in floppiness.
Untreated hypotonia can lead to hip dislocation and other problems.

Lucy gets treatment for this in regular physical therapy, speech, and occupational therapy. Her fine motor skills are improving because of therapy.

Lucy is a busy little girl who loves music… playing the keyboard and listening to all kinds of music makes her happy. She loves to color and draw, and enjoys playing with Play-Doh too. She also enjoys being outside to play whenever she gets the chance.

In spite of her challenges, Lucy is a happy little girl who is busy and active… keeping her mom and dad on their toes!

Sparrow Cash raised for Lucy will help with ongoing medical expenses, therapy items, and everyday living expenses. Students at High Lakes Elementary will “earn” Sparrow Cash by completing a minimum of 256 hours of sponsored community service.
