Keegan is an active, fun loving 12-year-old boy that loves sports, hunting, and fishing.
Keegan had been complaining about a faint pain for a few months, but thought he had pulled a muscle. Then, on October 3, 2017, he was taken to Urgent Care as he was having a hard time breathing without pain.
He was immediately transferred to Seattle Children’s Hospital, where his family was given the devastating news – Keegan had a large mass behind his rib cage, and it was growing toward his lung. He was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma.
Ewing's sarcoma is a type of cancer that occurs most often in and around the bones. Ewing's sarcoma is rare and typically affects children and young adults, though it can occur at any age. Ewing's sarcoma can occur in any bone, but most often begins in the leg bones and hipbones, as well as the bones in the arms, chest, skull and spine.
Keegan underwent surgery to biopsy the tumor, port placement, and a bone marrow biopsy. He began chemotherapy treatment on October 16th. He will remain in, or near, the hospital for 31 weeks while receiving treatment. Doctors hope to perform surgery after treatment to remove the tumor.
Keegan’s family will need help with the cost of travel to and from Seattle, as well as meals and lodging. Keegan’s mother will be off work to stay with, and care for Keegan. The family will also need help with day to day expenses.
Students in Cle Elum-Roslyn Schools will work hard to support Keegan and his family through sponsored community service and fundraising efforts.
