Izabell was a healthy and rambunctious four year old before her world, as she knew it, changed. One day “Izzy’s” parents noticed an unusual soft bump on her head. Her doctor thought it was a spider bite, but over time it didn’t go away. Izzy began to develop an unrelenting fever that lasted over a month. She was always tired and her skin yellowed. As Izzy grew worse, she started getting bloody noses and on September 25th, it got so bad her mom knew something was wrong. She took her to the ER and after a blood test they discovered the terrifying results; Izzy had acute lymphoblastic leukemia, cancer of the blood and bone marrow. She was flown to Doernbecher Childrens Hospital in Portland and the next day started chemo. On November 4th she had surgery to place a port in her chest. For 29 days straight she had chemo induction, but the leukemia failed to respond. Now at home, Izzy has chemo three times per week through her port and once a week at a hospital in Medford.
Because of her aggressive cancer, Izzy has endured ten blood, and five platelet transfusions so far. She takes medication to settle the nauseous stomach she gets from chemo. Soon, they anticipate she’ll get a g-tube to help keep her weight up from her loss of appetite. Izzy’s treatment plan is expected to last two and a half years.
Although Izabell has been through a lot, she reminds her parents that she’s still the princess in the family. Laughing, twirling and dancing with her little brother AJ, she proves that her trials haven’t held her spirit down.
Izabell will be adopted as a Sparrow to McLoughlin Middle School. Students will work hard to raise money for Izabell through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
