Anna's Story:Annabel (Anna) was born on February 6, 2013. As with many babies, she was placed on her mother to allow for those precious bonding moments. Her mother noticed she was extremely cold, so nurses did everything they could to warm the baby. It meant for a long night of monitoring her body temperature. The next day, Anna continually vomited throughout the day.
The following weeks were a scramble of going back and forth from hospital to home. There was most definitely something going wrong with this child’s health.
Many tests were done, and by the time Anna was around 6-months-old, doctors diagnosed her with Addison’s disease.
Addison’s disease is a disorder that occurs when your body produces insufficient hormones. To make matters worse, Anna was also diagnosed with a condition called panhypopituitarism. She does not produce the hormones needed to properly grow, live, and regulate her body temperature.
This condition makes her medically fragile, and she can crash very quickly if her warning signs are ignored. To prevent this, Anna is required to take daily growth hormones, thyroid medication, and steroids.
Despite several medical hurdles she faces on a daily basis, Anna remains a sweet, spunky, and inquisitive little girl. She and her family do their best to push through her health conditions and to keep doing the things she loves. Anna is a big-time BMX fan and loves to participate in the sport as much as her health will allow, albeit under a very watchful mother’s eye.
Anna will be adopted as a Sparrow to Phoenix High School. Students at PHS will work hard to raise money for Anna through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
