Stella's Story:Stella is a spunky three-year old who loves to dance, go to the beach and play with her sister. She is funny, smart and loves Trolls, Minnie Mouse, baby dolls and all things princess.
Stella was a healthy two year old, however shortly after she started preschool in November 2017, she began getting sick. She caught a cold, then an ear infection, followed by the flu. When she spiked another fever, the doctor noticed she was quite pale. Her blood tests showed that her counts were so low, that she needed a blood transfusion and was admitted to the hospital just before Christmas. She was in the hospital for two weeks and underwent two bone marrow biopsies which showed she did not have Leukemia and she ended up getting better on her own. After she was discharged from the hospital, Oncologists continued to try and find out what caused Stella's blood counts to be so low.
In February 2018, Stella awoke with enlarged lymph nodes in her neck and spiked another fever. She was once again admitted to Randall Children's Hospital. Doctors tested her blood again and sedated her to do a bone marrow biopsy. It was then, Stella was diagnosed with high risk ALL Leukemia. The first week of her treatment was spent in the hospital which included several doses of Chemotherapy and steroid treatments that continued at home. Stella’s treatments have included various forms of chemotherapy, steroids and many visits to the hospital.
While the side effects, such as nausea, weakness, physical pain and tiredness can take their toll, she has been a rock star through it all and loves her doctors and nurses.
Stella has a long road ahead with treatments but she is brave and has become a “professional patient”, taking things in stride.Stella is just entering the maintenance phase, which means fewer hospital visits and more at home treatments. She is doing incredibly well and will continue treatments until June 2020.
Despite all of these challenges, treatments and hospital visits, Stella is one of the sweetest most nurturing three-year-olds you will ever meet. She loves macaroni and cheese, broccoli and her cats, Timber and Jasper.
Stella will be adopted as a Sparrow to Sherwood High School. Students will work hard to teach others compassion and raise money for Stella through sponsored community service and fundraising.
