When Ashley (Nikko’s mom) was pregnant, she developed an aggressive type of anemia and her blood cells began attacking Nikko’s blood. Nikko also had too much fluid around him in the womb. He and his mom were airlifted to Portland and while still in utero, Nikko had his first blood transfusion. Shortly after, doctors decided to deliver Nikko by
C-section at only twenty-six weeks. Little Nikko was born on August 14th, 2013, weighing only 2 lbs., 4 oz. Because he was extremely premature, he had some complications. His skin was translucent and paper-thin. Nikko’s lungs were underdeveloped and he had a heart murmur. His parents had to wait weeks before they could even hold him. Nikko needed assistance from oxygen and a feeding tube through his nose. After spending the first 120 days of his life in the hospital, little Nikko finally got to come home.
Since birth Nikko has had seven blood transfusions (all within the first two months of life) and may need more. In November, he also endured surgery for a hernia in his tummy and a hole in his intestines.
Now, at 7-months-old, Nikko is weighing in at over 10 lbs. and is a happy and growing boy. Nikko still has lung disease (from underdeveloped lungs), but doctors believe that as he gets stronger, his lungs will heal themselves. Nikko may need future surgery for inflammation in his throat (which sometimes makes it difficult to breathe), and will soon start several kinds of therapy on a regular basis to help him developmentally “catch up.”
Nikko will be adopted as a Sparrow to Mazama High School in Klamath Falls. Students will work hard to raise money for Nikko through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
