Mckenzie is an active little girl that loves to be outside and especially enjoys the park. She love to color and create when she isn’t playing outside. To look at her, you would never know that she is a very sick little girl.
When Mckenzie was a month old, she had not gained a single ounce of weight though she ate constantly. Doctors ran tests to confirm their suspicions. Mckenzie was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. She was immediately sent to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland for further testing and to begin her treatment for this incurable disease.
Cystic fibrosis is an illness that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive tract and other areas of the body. Mckenzie cannot absorb her food properly due to a lack of digestive enzymes to break it down. She must take 3 pills before she eats or drinks anything in order for the calories to be absorbed into her body. At the age of 4, Mckenzie weighs only 30 lbs and must eat as many high calorie foods each day as she can in order to avoid having to get a feeding tube. CF children don’t have appetites however, so it is very challenging to get those calories in.
Mckenzie’s lungs will also continue to deteriorate over time. Doctors say that the best thing she can do is remain active and exercise as much as possible. Still, Mckenzie will most likely need a lung transplant somewhere around 11-14 years of age. Because of her lungs, it is very important for Mckenzie not to get sick, as it takes many weeks to recover, and is extremely hard on her body.
Students at Redmond Proficiency Academy will complete hours of community service to “earn” the Sparrow Cash provided by SunWest Builders. These funds for will be used for ongoing medical expenses, as well as travel expenses and medications.
