Jorge's Story:
Even before he was born, 6-year-old Jorge was fighting against the odds. At six months in utero, tests revealed that Jorge had gastroschisis, a life-threatening condition that caused his intestines to be on the outside of his body. Because of this, Jorge was born one month early and doctors performed surgery immediately. Baby Jorge spent his entire first month in the hospital and his parents were told that he would never be able to eat on his own or have a typical life. However, Jorge proved these predictions wrong and over the next several years, grew strong and was able to life a happy life with his family.

In December of 2012, things changed. Jorge stopped eating regularly and his mother noticed very dark circles under his eyes. Jorge’s health continued to decline. Jorge’s mother felt and saw a hard lump in his abdomen and took action. Tests were done, and on March 13, 2013, Jorge was diagnosed with a type of liver cancer called embryonal sarcoma.

Tests revealed that Jorge had a large tumor on the right side of his liver. Jorge had surgery on June 10th, 2013, in which surgeons removed 75% of his liver, and four weeks later, Jorge began chemotherapy treatment. Unfortunately, this treatment has brought with it several serious complications, such as infections and seizures, which have led to many emergency trips to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland.

Jorge has a long hard road ahead of him, but in spite of this, he wears a smile that lights up every room and instantly draws people near. Jorge loves superheroes (his favorites are Spider-man and Ghost Rider), loves soccer, and also loves spending time with his family and playing with his little brother.

Jorge will be adopted as a Sparrow to the Eagle Point Middle School. Students will work hard to raise money for Jorge through community service and fundraising projects. Funds raised for Jorge will help cover frequent travel expenses, and will greatly help with general living expenses during this time of need.
