Christian's Story:(1/7/09) Christian was born 3 ? months premature with severe grade 4 bleeding on the brain. He spent the first 4 ? months of his life in the Intensive Care Unit for babies. He as had 8 surgeries so far including 3 brain surgeries, 1 heart surgery, an operation on his right eye, and one to have a feeding tube put in his stomach. He will eventually have to have another surgery to get tubes in his ears. He has extremely low vision (he can only see clearly about a foot in front of him), has cerebral palsy with orthopedic problems (he wears braces on his legs), and is epileptic. He didn't walk until he was almost 4 years old. He has an oral aversion, so has to be tube fed. Christian also has an extreme speech delay and is just now starting to talk in full sentences. He works with a speech therapist but still has a hard time expressing himself. He does fin at school, but can't go out in other public places he's unfamiliar with because it's too overwhelming for him. Christian's favorite toy is a small keyboard. He loves being around other children and loves to be outdoors. In spite of all his challenges he is a very happy boy. He's really a miracle and shouldn't be able to do what he does. Christian is cared for by his grandparents, who have been caring for him since he was born. He will need special equipment in order to read and communicate. He also needs special support stockings for under his leg/braces and good supportive shoes in order to continue walking.
