Carlos is a brave and courageous 17-year-old. Recently, Carlos has entered into a new battle. In March of 2015, Carlos kept getting sick in different ways. He would be healthy for a little while and then would get sick again. He had a couple ear infections, kept having pain on the back side of his leg.
His normal energy level seemed to disappear; all he wanted to do was sleep. He started to get some bloody noses randomly and was losing his appetite. He was also getting some redness in his right eye. Whenever his parents, Marcelo and Martha, took him to the doctors, they didn’t seem to have an answer for what was going on with Carlos.
It was the end of May, Carlos suddenly couldn’t breathe. His parents rushed him to the emergency room. There at the hospital Carlos was stabilized. Doctors did some routine blood work and also had Carlos produce a urine sample. It was there that doctors saw that Carlos was going through kidney failure.
Carlos’ kidney was only working at 20%. Throughout the summer and fall, Carlos had to go through chemotherapy every two weeks. He currently takes 10-12 medications daily. Although Carlos is currently stable, doctors say that he will need a kidney transplant within the next 10-15 years. For now, he will continue to have to take multiple forms of medication daily.
Although Carlos has had a rough journey in the past year and a long road ahead, he is just like any teenage boy. He enjoys different sporting activities and video games. His family loves and encourages him through his battle. Carlos is looking forward to going to college for engineering, or becoming an electrician.
Carlos will be adopted as a Sparrow to his own school, Redmond High School. Students will work hard to raise money for Carlos and his family through Mt. Bachelor sponsored community service and fundraising projects. Sparrow Cash raised will help provide for the costly medication that Carlos needs.
