Brandon is one of the bravest, most inspirational 10 year olds around. He has battled more than most adults have in their entire life. It all started when Brandon was born with a heart defect. He then went through a series of three surgeries to repair a single chamber in his heart. After persevering through three heart surgeries, Brandon has continuing echograms and heart CATHs to follow up on his heart defect.
When Brandon was 6 years old, his parents noticed issues with his balance. Upon further tests, doctors found a brain tumor. It was then confirmed that the tumor was cancerous. Brandon’s parents, Wayne and Eva were devastated. In January of 2010, Brandon had brain surgery to take out the tumor. After surgery, Brandon went through intensive chemotherapy and radiation. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning for this loving, playful little boy. Brandon was diagnosed with Posterior Fossa Syndrome, which causes a variety of symptoms including mutism or speech disturbances, dysphagia, decreased motor movement, cranial nerve palsies and, emotional lability. These signs and symptoms develop from an average range of 24 to 107 hours after surgery and may take weeks to years to resolve. Brandon went through extensive therapies to relearn basically everything and continues with outpatient therapy every summer.
Brandon was cleared at annual check ups until August of 2014. Then in February of this year, Brandon was hit with pneumonia. He was also struggling with his balance, vomiting and headaches. It was then that doctors found another brain tumor.
Brandon had his second brain surgery to remove the tumor on March 6th, 2015. As a result from the surgery, the right side of Brandon’s face is healing slowly. The tumor was also cancerous and a result of the heavy radiation from Brandon’s first surgery. Chemotherapy and radiation has taken a toll on sweet Brandon. He wears two hearing aids and glasses from the chemotherapy and radiation he received in 2010. The combination has also ruined Brandon’s pituitary gland, so his parents administer shots to replace hormones that the pituitary gland produces.
Brandon is a 10 year old unique warrior. He loves playing video games, playing with his dad and siblings. He is obsessed with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Transformers bumble bee.
Brandon will be adopted as a Sparrow to Redmond Proficiency Academy. Students will work hard to raise Sparrow Cash for Brandon and his family through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
