Abby's Story:

Abigail, or “Abby” to family and friends, is an adorable, happy, and very active 3-year-old little girl. Abby loves to spend time outside playing and likes to ride tricycles. Like many little girls her age, she is also in love with horses, loves princesses, and of course, all things “Frozen.”

However, this past year, Abby’s life has changed dramatically because of cancer. On February 25th, 2015, Abby was diagnosed with leukemia. She began chemotherapy treatment immediately, but after the first month of this intensive treatment, she was declared “high risk.” Abby’s white blood counts were not coming down enough and it appeared that her body was adapting to the chemo.

Abby continued treatment, receiving chemotherapy every day in some form, including steroids, IV drip, and a chemo pill. Chemotherapy treatment would often make Abby very tired and lethargic, and she eventually lost her hair.

On August 31st, 2015, Abby moved to the next step in her treatment- receiving a bone marrow transplant. Abby was admitted to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and received her transplant on September 9th. Abby is in recovery, still at Doernbecher, and will be there for most, if not all of the month of October.

Since her transplant, Abby has endured fevers and a rash, but doctors say that the transplant is working. Abby and her family are looking forward to the day she will get to leave the hospital and return home, but they know that her fight will continue long after that day comes.

Abby will be adopted as a Sparrow to Parkrose Middle School in Portland. Parkrose students will work hard to make a difference in Abby’s life through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
