Benjamin is a super creative, intelligent, and caring 10-year-old boy who likes to draw, swim, and loves Stranger Things, and everything about monsters—his current favorite is Alien from Alien and Predator!
Benjamin was born in China, where he was adopted by his family when he was 2 years old.
Benjamin was born with a virus called hepatitis B, which can make people sick by harming their liver. He was also born with a cleft palate, meaning there was an opening in the roof of his mouth. As a baby, he had his first surgery to close the opening and repair his lip.
In September 2023, doctors discovered a large tumor on Benjamin’s liver. A month later, he underwent surgery, during which doctors removed the tumor, his gallbladder, and half of his liver.
Soon after, Benjamin and his family learned that the tumor was cancerous. The cancer, which began in his liver, has since spread to his pelvis, where another tumor has developed.
Benjamin has spent a lot of time in the hospital, where he has endured multiple cycles and two different regimens of chemotherapy. His bloodwork improved and continued to improve! They made the decision to move forward with radiation as well in hopes of keeping the forward progress.
Benjamin spent five weeks in Seattle receiving his radiation treatments where his family members took turns visiting, but they couldn’t all be together as a family.
Benjamin’s numbers continued to drop into normal range, where they have remained since August!
Benjamin had lost his hair and was extremely tired and frustrated from feeling so unwell, and he even lost his appetite. But all of that has improved dramatically—he is so proud of himself, has grown in his confidence, and his hair has grown back!
Benjamin isn’t currently undergoing treatment, but he isn’t considered in remission yet. His doctor explained that the cancer could return at any time, and they won’t feel confident that he has fully beaten it until his bloodwork remains stable for two full years.
Benjamin will be adopted as a Sparrow to Summit High School in Bend. Summit students will work hard to earn money for Benjamin through sponsored community service, supporting him and cheering him on as his family continues to navigate his medical journey.
