Marco's Story:11/1/11 - Marco has been readopted as a sparrow due to a relapse. The students at South Medford High School will adopt Marco for the 2011/2012 school year.(3/9/10) Marco Alvarez is an adorable, playful, and loving 3-year-old. In October of 2009, Marco's parents noticed some swollen lymph nodes on his little body. They took him to the doctor and within days, Marco was diagnosed with lymphoma, a type of cancer that begins in immune system cells. Marco started his first round of chemotherapy on October 27th, 2009 and will have over 10 cycles of chemotherapy this year, receiving one cycle every 3 weeks, switching between hospitals in Medford and Portland. Although this treatment is needed to fight the cancer, it is affecting Marco's cognitive and motor development. Marco loves to play outside and swing on swings but has to stay indoors much of the time due to his weakened immune system. He likes watching cartoons and playing video games and loves being around his big brothers. Despite all he is going through at such a young age, Marco often has a smile on his face and eyes that are full of life. St. Mary's School in Medford is adopting Marco as their Sparrow, thanks to their sponsor, Rogue Disposal & Recycling, Inc. Sparrow Cash raised for Marco will help his family pay for frequent travel expenses to Portland and will also help with basic family needs. As students work to make a difference in his life, Marco will be making an impact in their lives.
